Course contents: Aseptic conditions in microbiology – preparation and sterilization of growth media. Microscopes – Microscopic observation of microorganisms – Stains. Quantitative measurement of bacterial cells using serial dilutions - Bacterial growth in liquid cultures – Growth curves. Antibiotics/Resistance mechanisms. Influence of exogenous factors on bacterial growth. Chemical components of blood - Titration of blood and plasma. Use of spectrophotometers – Protein quantitation – Enzyme kinetics. Electrophoresis: Preparation of polyacrylamide and agarose gels. Electrophoresis: Staining and molecular weight determination. Thin Layer Chromatography (amino acids and lipids).
